International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate and amplify the voices of women across all industries – and in football, that includes those capturing the game through the lens...

Sports photography has often been a male-dominated field, but more and more women are making their mark in the industry, reshaping the way women’s sport is documented and following in the footsteps of Palace’s very own footballing pioneer, Hy Money.

Crystal Palace Women were therefore proud to welcome five female photographers to our home game against Liverpool last weekend to document the action and showcase their work, highlighting the underrepresentation of women in sports photography.

On International Women’s Day and beyond, their work continues to shine a light on the power of representation in football, and ensures that women’s sport is captured in a way that truly reflects its growth and impact...

“I focused on shooting the Crystal Palace supporters today. I just wanted to capture their emotion and how they interacted with the game and each other.

“I think it’s important for women to be behind the lens because it’s empowering, and it also reflects just how far women have come and how far we still have to go – not only in photography, but also in sport.

“Sport and creativity are powerful tools for connection, and if we can use them to empower other women and shape the future, then I think that’s really important.”

"The game is growing, there’s more engagement from different people, and representation matters – not just in front of the camera, but behind it too. Capturing those moments and telling those stories is what we need to do.

“It’s vital that women are behind the lens because it allows us to break barriers – and break them together. Seeing more women on the field is very inspiring.

“I love shooting here in the UK. I’m not from here, but I love it because I definitely think it’s about community over competition. Everyone just needs to open the door for the next person behind them.

“As a black woman, it’s also significant for me to be down there. Maybe someone in the stands sees me and realises they can do this too. At the very least, they have a visual of someone like them, showing that it’s possible.”

“I think it’s important for women to be behind the lens because it makes athletes feel more comfortable and allows them to relate to the person capturing their image.

“It also provides opportunities for women looking for inspiration. If they see someone like them in the industry, they might feel encouraged to pursue their own careers.

“Beyond that, I just think it’s cool. Women belong in these spaces. It’s a male-dominated industry now, but that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way.”

“It’s important that we have female photographers because it brings a new perspective to the sport. Women capture different elements, different emotions, and that adds something unique.

“It’s also about inspiration. If young girls in the crowd see female photographers working on the pitch, it might encourage them to follow the same path.

“Representation matters – it helps create new opportunities and opens doors for the next generation.”
