Match Action: Aston Villa 1-2 Crystal Palace | EFL Cup

Deadline day loan signing Matt Turner made his debut between the sticks for Palace as one of three changes to the side which took the pitch to face Villa.

Will Hughes and Eddie Nketiah were also in from the win over Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, with Jefferson Lerma and Ismaïla Sarr dropping out.

Palace were sharp in the press against Spurs and that theme continued early on at Villa Park, with Nketiah and strike-partner Jean-Philippe Mateta causing a lot of problems for Unai Emery’s defence as they played out from the back.

Despite the early pressure, it was actually the hosts who got the first shots away. Leon Bailey had two attempts on goal in quick succession, one where he cut inside and fired straight at Turner, while the other was an effort that was dragged wide on the edge of the box.

With seven minutes on the clock, Palace managed to take the lead. An initial ball across from Adam Wharton was cleared out towards Daniel Muñoz on the right hand side and the wing-back whipped in a delightful ball to pick out Eberechi Eze.

The Palace No. 10 made no mistake, meeting the ball with his head and steering it into the bottom corner past a helpless Joe Gauci in the Villa goal.

Just a few minutes after putting Palace ahead, Eze was walking off applauding the fans due to an injury sustained after a challenge from the Villa defence.

Chances for a second came and went quickly for Palace, with Wharton firing over the bar and Mateta also guiding a header just wide of the mark.

Villa managed to equalise halfway through the first-half, with Jhon Durán getting on the scoresheet. A long ball out wide from Boubacar Kamara picked out Bailey on the right, who in turn cut it back across for Durán inside the box for a finish on his right foot.

Shortly after the equaliser for the hosts, Wharton went down on the turf and was also unable to continue. A second sub for the Eagles in the first-half did not bode well, though a moment of brilliance from Trevoh Chalobah almost saw the side reclaim the lead.

A corner in from Will Hughes wasn’t properly dealt with by the Villa defence, allowing substitute Daichi Kamada to hit it on the volley, before it broke to Chalobah who attempted a goalbound backheel that was blocked.

Five minutes after his attempted backheel, he found himself down the other end and sliding in to deny Jaden Philogene inside the box. It was a similar duel again in added time of the first-half, though Chalobah stood tall this time around to block Philogene’s powerful strike.

After the interval, the hosts came out with a spring in their step and almost managed to claim the lead within 30 seconds. Durán broke free and pounced on a loose ball, allowing him to run in behind and fire a shot away, though a flying save from Turner denied the Colombian.

Palace were straight down the other end, as Mateta took the slightest of touches on the edge of the box to evade a challenge and get a shot away, however it was blocked by the returning Tyrone Mings. Hughes fired over from the resulting corner.

The rapid start quickly petered out, with both teams sounding each other out and trying to find a decisive pass. It suddenly burst back into life near the hour-mark as Durán and Ian Maatsen almost combined for the hosts, with the latter picking out the former.

Tyrick Mitchell put in a cross, which wasn’t properly dealt with by Villa, and it broke to Kamada on the edge of the box who fired wide of the far post. The resulting goal kick was poorly played out by centre-back Diego Carlos into the path of Kamada and this time the Japanese international made no mistake.

Taking aim at Gauci’s goal, he let off a pinpoint strike on his right foot, finding the bottom left corner for his second goal in this tournament and the Eagles’ second on the night. He wheeled away in celebration and slid joyfully in front of the travelling Palace faithful.

After taking the lead again, the Eagles enjoyed a strong spell of possession and continued to keep the hosts at bay. The best effort from the side in claret and blue came from Philogene - a long range effort that was no issue for Matt Turner.

Palace saw out the remainder of the game and were rarely troubled beyond the long-range Philogene effort. Glasner and his side march on into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time in 13 years.
