“I think the game had two very distinct halves,” Alonso began. “In the first half, we pressed exceptionally well and controlled the play. We created a lot of chances and, in my opinion, deserved to lead. Unfortunately, they scored in the last minute of the half, but overall, our pressing created real opportunities.”

He continued: “We were dominant in the opponent’s half, very aggressive, and winning balls high up the pitch. We managed to score one goal, which was a good reflection of our approach, but it was unlucky to concede at the very end of the first half.”

“The second half was different,” he added. “It became more stop-start, with fewer clear-cut chances for either team. In the final 20 minutes, we had a couple of opportunities, but overall, the game was balanced.

“I think the draw is a fair result – perhaps we deserved a little more, but I’m very happy with the team’s performance.”

Alonso also highlighted individual performances, including Donte Martin, who now has three goals in two league games after scoring twice in the 5-0 win over Birmingham and adding the breakthrough against Spurs today.

Several Under-16 players stepped up to support the U18s, with Lucca Benetton between the sticks, Dylan Monk at the back, and Mylo Bernard and Jamal Lee making key contributions up front. Lee, in particular, made his U18 competitive debut.

On Lee’s performance, Alonso said: “Jamal helped the team a lot. I always tell him to play for the team, focus on his work, and the goals will come. He has great quality on the ball, is improving every game, and I’m very happy with his performance today. I think he has a bright future with the U18s if he continues like this.”

He also praised the wider Under-16 group: “I’m equally happy with the other Under-16s – Lucca \[Benetton\], Dylan \[Monk\], Mylo \[Bernard\]. We have a really strong generation coming through, and it’s exciting to see them stepping up. It’s very positive for the future.”

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s Premier League Cup quarter-final against Peterborough United, Alonso is confident in the team’s preparation and mentality.

“Yes, the team is in a good place,” he said. “We are always competitive, and this was a tough game physically and mentally. Now it’s time to rest and recover before Monday’s training, so we can be ready to fight for the win against Peterborough.”

Recent weeks had marked a milestone period for our Under-18s. A dominant 5-0 win over Birmingham City lifted the young Eagles into second in the U18 Premier League South, before a dramatic 2-1 victory against Stevenage secured the club’s first FA Youth Cup quarter-final in over 15 years.

Tottenham, meanwhile, arrived in South London in formidable form. Three straight league wins had moved them into third, while an impressive defensive run saw them record four consecutive victories and clean sheets across league and cup – dispatching Fulham (5-0), Aston Villa (1-0), Norwich (3-0) and Bristol City (3-0) by an aggregate score of 12-0.

With both sides tied on 27 points and pushing to challenge Chelsea for the title, a tasty encounter was anticipated!

The first chance of the half fell Palace’s way as an aggressive high press forced a turnover high up the pitch. Euan Danaher struck low from distance, his effort tipped onto the post by a full-stretch Dylan Thompson in the Spurs goal.

The young Eagles sustained their relentless press, continually probing and applying pressure through a series of dangerous deliveries into the box and Dylan Monk’s trademark long throws. The rhythm, tempo and intensity of Palace’s play were evident from the outset, immediately putting Spurs on the back foot.

Tottenham gradually began to find routes through Palace’s press, working the ball into advanced areas. However, despite spells in and around the penalty area, they were unable to truly test the defence or create a clear-cut opening.

With so much at stake – second place on the line and the title race firmly in view – it was perhaps understandable that, approaching the 20-minute mark, neither side had yet found their full rhythm. A stop-start pattern, punctuated by frequent blasts of the referee’s whistle, further disrupted the flow of the contest.

The pendulum began to swing as Tottenham enjoyed the lion’s share of possession. Patiently shifting the ball from side to side, the visitors searched for an opening but were unable to breach Palace’s disciplined and well-organised backline.

Yet as the half moved beyond its midpoint, Palace rediscovered their rhythm. The aggressive high press returned to full effect, with Stuart Oduro driving a fierce effort straight at Thompson before Anderson followed up with a strike that stung the 'keeper’s palms.

The breakthrough arrived on 26 minutes. Attempting to play out from the back, the Spurs 'keeper miscued his clearance and the ball dropped invitingly for Donte Martin a few yards from goal. Keeping his composure, Martin rifled into the far corner to register his eighth goal of the season.

Spurs offered a handful of warning signs but had yet to seriously test Lucca Benetton. At the other end, Palace looked to press home their advantage, buoyed by growing momentum. Jacob Fasida nearly doubled the lead with a cleverly struck free-kick drilled low and hard beneath the wall, but Thompson reacted sharply to gather.

However, Spurs struck on the stroke of half-time. A pull-back from the byline caused a scramble in the box, and amid the pinball, Oliver Boast reacted quickest to stab home from close range. The sides went into the interval level.

Palace began the second half on the front foot. Danaher drove forward purposefully before releasing Martin, who in turn found Jasper Judd to the right of the penalty area, but his arrowed delivery was scrambled clear.

The pressure continued to build as Judd saw a succession of efforts from the right channel on the edge of the box blocked by a wall of white shirts. It was a strong, assertive start to the half from the young Eagles, who looked intent on regaining control.

Ten minutes after the restart, Palace broke with real pace as Anderson surged clear towards goal, pursued closely by George Feeney.

Under heavy pressure, Anderson went to ground as he entered a promising position, prompting a blast of the referee’s whistle – but it was Spurs who were awarded the free-kick, much to Palace’s frustration.

On the hour mark, Alonso made his first change, introducing Daniel Owoade in place of Oduro. The reshuffle saw Owoade operate from the right, Anderson move into a more central role, and Judd switch to the opposite flank.

Aside from a routine diving save, Benetton had still not been seriously tested. At the other end, Alonso’s side were combining neatly, carving out openings through slick patterns of play. Anderson came closest, his volley from just inside the area blocked by a defender’s outstretched boot as Palace continued to press for a second

Further changes followed as Alonso looked to spark a late winner, introducing prolific Under-16 talisman Mylo Bernard alongside Jamar Lee, who was handed his Under-18 debut.

With 10 minutes remaining, Palace were forced into a spell of resolute defending as momentum shifted towards the visitors. The contest had tightened, tension rising with every challenge, and it carried the sense that the next goal – if it came – would prove decisive.

Palace came agonisingly close to snatching a winner when Owoade fizzed a dangerous ball across the face of goal. 

Angibeaud met it first time, hooking his effort towards the far corner – only to see it graze the outside of the post. For a split second he had wheeled away in celebration, believing it had nestled in, but it drifted inches wide.

Bernard then raced onto Judd’s lofted pass in behind and shaped to find the near corner, but Thompson reacted sharply, getting down to parry the effort away and preserve parity.

There was a worrying moment late on as Sean Somade was stretchered off the pitch following treatment. Everyone at the club of course sends their very best wishes to Sean and hopes for a swift and full recovery.

A series of stoppages resulted in a substantial period of added time and, with more than six minutes played, Judd was unfortunately shown a red card. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Palace stood firm to secure a hard-fought point.

The result leaves Palace level on 28 points with Tottenham, though a superior goal difference keeps the young Eagles in second place, with Spurs third. Chelsea remain top of the table, five points clear.

Attention now turns to the Premier League Cup quarter-finals, where Palace travel to face Peterborough United F.C. on Tuesday (17th February, 13:00 GMT), aiming to build on this momentum and return to winning ways.

A relentless Crystal Palace Under-18s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur in the U18 Premier League South title showdown on Saturday morning (14th February) at the Academy.


U18 Report & Highlights: Young Eagles held by Tottenham in title showdown

Swaby joined Palace in January 2025 from AC Milan, and has been a core part of the defence ever since.

The Jamaica international suffered an injury late on against Arsenal in the Subway Women's League Cup in December, and missed several games as a result.

Last Sunday's victory marked her return to the field, when she replaced Hayley Nolan on the 73rd minute against Bristol City.

She reflected on her spell on the sidelines, and how happy she was to be on the grass again.

"Yeah, it was great to be back in the team on Sunday. 

"It was a bit of a nagging and unfortunate injury that just kind of ended up being a longer recovery than I had originally anticipated. 

"So yeah, I was really happy to be back out there with the team - just to even be a part of the matchday squad again, so to get a couple minutes as well was really exciting," Swaby said.

For us to get that result under that pressure was huge and showed a lot of character from the group

After last weekend's win, Palace find themselves in fourth-place, just one point behind Bristol City in third-place. 

With the top three teams having a chance at promotion this season, the Eagles will need to keep winning in order to keep their Women's Super League dreams alive.

Speaking about the Bristol City performance and it's significance, Swaby said: "I was just really proud of the girls for the win, it was a huge win. 

"I think the previous week we didn't get the result that we had hoped for, and I think we put ourselves in a bit of a difficult position in the table, but with Bristol being right above us, it was really a great opportunity. 

"I think there was a decent amount of pressure on us to perform. So for us to get that result under that pressure was huge and showed a lot of character from the group."

A key team in the race for promotion are Monday's opponents, Birmingham City.

Swaby spoke about what the team are expecting on Monday, and how December's win could be important for the team's confidence.

She said: "I think having beat them the first time around definitely helps with the belief that you already know that you can do it. 

"But obviously, you also know that on the flip side, they'll come back, they're going to be super hungry. They're going to want to rectify that result. 

"We know that we're going to have to be just as switched on, if not more switched on this time around. 

"Every game is becoming and starting to feel more and more important as we're down to the final few here."

Having played in cities such as Paris, Milan, Rome and Los Angeles - it's fair to say that Swaby is well-travelled.

One city she was yet to add to her collection was London, and so she looked back on her last 12 months at Palace and what life has been like in the capital.

She said: "I came during a difficult moment of trying to stay up within the table within the WSL, and it was disappointing to not achieve that. 

"But I think that one of the things that I like most about Palace is that whilst it was sad to go down, I felt like this is a place that deserves to be in the WSL. 

"Just having all this infrastructure here is massive, and it is motivating every day to know that you're training with high-quality players and that you have the facilities and resources around you to help you achieve at the highest level. 

"Honestly, the last year has just gone by really fast. London is one of my favourite cities, so I'm excited to be here.

"I think every day is like a little mini adventure here. There's always something to do outside of the football pitch. And I love being able to have that balance.

"And yeah, it's nice to be close to some family, close to my sister."

After Monday's game, Swaby will join up with the Jamaica national team ahead of their CONCACAF qualifying group stage game against Nicaragua on the 3rd March.

Success in qualifying will see Swaby and Jamaica make a third consecutive FIFA Women's World Cup next year in Brazil.

She spoke about the pride she feels whenever she represents her country, and the prospect of a third World Cup with the Reggae Girlz.

Swaby said: "It's always a great honour to represent Jamaica and it's something that I'm so proud of.

"When I look back on my career, I know it will be probably the thing I talk about the most. 

"But yeah, just being able to represent your country is an incredible feeling. 

"And I think every time we do it and find success, it just feels like we're defying the odds, like this little tiny country is able to achieve so much."

Ahead of Palace's trip to Birmingham City on Monday, defender Allyson Swaby sat down to talk about her return from injury, the hunt for promotion, as well as the prospect of going to a third World Cup with Jamaica.

It was one of those totally off-the-cuff moments.

I was born in Richmond. When I was a child, most of my uncles used to take me to Chelsea, but I was never quite a fan, and just liked being taken out for an ice cream! I actually left school at 15, and went on to work in the city for some international commercial insurance brokers.

My family moved to South Norwood in around 1959. My new friends told me I should either support Crystal Palace, or Croydon Amateurs – and as Palace’s ground was only 300 yards up the road, it was a no-brainer!

I met Doreen at the local youth club. At that time, she was working in Allders – in its day, the megastore of Croydon. She was Chinese Malaysian and had come to England to study a Nursing course, but gave it up and decided to stay and work in London. A friend had brought her to a dance at St. Chad’s Youth Club, just up the road from Selhurst Park.

When I found out Doreen lived in West Croydon, I offered to run her home. The rest, as they say, was history.

Doreen and I met in 1965 and got engaged in 1966. At the time, living on Holmesdale Road, I was regularly attending Palace matches. If I happened to be doing something else on a Saturday and missed a bit of a match, I could actually still get into the ground for free, because the top gate on the Holmesdale Road End was always opened at half-time! My friends and I used to stand on the Terrace, or walk round to Whitehorse Lane.

I used to buy what was a tiny little programme at that point and, in around November time, I was flicking through it and thought: “Oh, my 24th birthday is going to be on a Saturday – that’s very handy.” Doreen and I were already engaged, so I thought: “We’ll get married on my birthday – and then we’ll never forget our wedding anniversary!”

In those days, everybody seemed to get married on a Saturday, and the parish priest said: “It’ll have to be a 10 o’clock wedding, John, because I’ve got two others that day.” As a result, the church hall was already booked, so we decided to have the reception in the family house on Holmesdale Road.

The day came around and, by the time we’d already had our wedding breakfast, everybody was sort of standing around. With all our family and friends there, the place was a bit crowded, and we were wondering what else we could do, so I said: “well, why don’t we go to the football match? We’ll go as we are!”

I persuaded Doreen and the two bridesmaids (the blonde one in the photograph is my sister). Everyone thought it could be a fun idea – even one of my uncles and his son, who were Chelsea supporters! I phoned up and said there were about 17 or 18 of us who wanted to come to the match, and the club found a block for all of us. One of my aunts generously paid for the tickets – about 10 shillings each in those days.

It was just one of those quirks that in any other year, on a 4th February \[1967\], you could have had snow. Some of the guests lent Doreen and the bridesmaids fur coats – but it happened to be quite a nice, sunny day.

I wasn’t thinking it would be anything at all – just something for us to remember, and which might amuse a few people in the stands. We didn’t anticipate there would be any press photographers there – so we were a bit stunned when we found out we’d appeared in two of the Sunday papers and the Croydon Advertiser!

All the fans around us cheered – they thought it was brilliant. It was just one of those silly off-the-cuff things you do, not thinking it’d be of any interest to people other than yourselves. But as we were trooping up Holmesdale Road with all the crowd, they were all giving us a cheer, which was great.

We were playing Plymouth Argyle, and I remember it wasn’t a particularly brilliant match – but we did at least win 2-1, which made the day!

These days, my three daughters and youngest grandson are all Palace fans too, and the photograph has always amused them.

Over the years, Doreen and I gradually moved further away from Croydon. We lived for many years in and around the Fleet area, but we still attended home matches and – until she passed away in December 2012 – we were Season Ticket Holders in the upper tier of the Holmesdale Road Stand, overlooking the goalmouth.

Nowadays, although I now live in Wiltshire, my youngest grandson Luca and I are Season Ticket Holders in the Arthur Wait, which is great. We usually get up to the ground early so we can have our fish and chips in Doneagles – that’s always been my grandson’s favourite treat – and as we sit in the front row, I quite regularly get high-fives with Alice and Pete the Eagle.

I love Oliver Glasner and his attacking style of play. It’s been really brilliant supporting Palace – there’s always something interesting happening – and we continue to support our local team to this day.

How Valentine’s became a stand-out date in Palace history

#### **1976 - Taylor dismantles Chelsea**

When Division Three Crystal Palace took to the Stamford Bridge turf against names such as Peter Bonetti, Ray Wilkins and Ron Harris, they knew they were entering the FA Cup Fifth Round as clear and deserving underdogs.

But while Chelsea boasted Bonetti, Wilkins and Harris, Palace had Peter Taylor, who dazzled at his mesmeric best that afternoon in SW6 - scoring twice and assisting once. 

The game’s first goal came via Nicky Chatterton - son of the iconic groundsman, Len - who poked home from six yards as Taylor’s thunderous shot cannoned off the underside of the crossbar to fall kindly to the Palace midfielder. Next up, Taylor would drive home from 20 yards out before netting a memorable free-kick from the edge of the box to seal victory and progression in the FA Cup.

After Taylor's first, the Blues did, however, pull two goals back to bring the game level at 2-2. And then came Taylor’s free-kick.

Palace were awarded a dead ball just outside the Chelsea box and, having played the standout game of his career, only one man could ever step-up to strike it.

Dave Swindlehurst burst towards the spot-kick, but he knew the score. The forward dummied a shot and ran past the ball, leaving Taylor to cooly strike home and launch the Eagles into the FA Cup quarter final, where he would assist Alan Whittle’s solitary effort to secure Palace’s first-ever Cup semi final.

“When we played Leeds, Dave Swindlehurst had an almighty long shot from the exact same position as our free-kick against Chelsea," Taylor recalled.

"I said to myself: ‘They will think he’ll hit it again’. I said to Swindy: ‘Do me a favour, please just run over it’. I’m sure Chelsea will have been thinking about how powerful he was, and then it was a different kind of free-kick."

Perhaps more memorable than Taylor’s masterclass that day, though, was Allison lifting three fingers to the Chelsea fans - famously forewarning them of the score.

#### **2004 - Johnson scores three as Palace romp to Valentine’s victory**

Andrew Johnson was in the form of his life as Stoke City travelled to Selhurst Park in 2004. So when he netted after just five minutes against the Potters, those inside SE25 may well have envisioned a busy afternoon.

Sure enough, the visiting John Eustace bagged barely a minute later and the supporters’ expectations were vindicated, with Palace and Stoke going on to bag seven more times between them.

Fans had always been in for a high-octane treat, though, as two of the First Division’s most in-form sides butted heads in SE25. 

Palace had won five of their last six fixtures with Stoke boasting seven from nine. Both teams were hunting promotion, and both teams had left it late to make their push.

But the key figure to separate the two sides was Johnson - who struck home for the 18th time in 16 games that afternoon, later becoming the league’s top scorer on 28 goals.

The following season Johnson would come close to repeating the feat in the Premier League, bagging 21 times to finish runner-up behind Arsenal’s Thierry Henry on 25.

#### **2010 - Ambrose stunner earns underdogs a draw**

Darren Ambrose may well have been the master of the sublime, but still no one expected him to score when he approached a free-kick against Premier League Aston Villa on Valentine’s Day 2010.

It was the FA Cup fifth round: Ambrose was 35 yards out, he was facing the famous Brad Friedel and his club were plunged into administration just two weeks before.

There was no way the midfielder could or should try an audacious, risky effort as his cash-strapped club held a precious draw with League Cup finalists and top tier giants Aston Villa.

But this was Darren Ambrose, and this was an audacious, risky effort from 35 yards out.

The midfielder promptly scored.

Frustratingly, Villa would equalise through Stiliyan Petrov in the dying minutes and later go on to win the FA Cup replay.

Palace would, of course, be rescued on the last day of the season with that legendary Survival Sunday draw and the club would be saved when the CPFC 2010 consortium took over.

Amidst all the drama of that year, however, Ambrose’s free-kick remains an understated highlight.

### Premier League with Pride

**Crystal Palace are proud to back the ‘Premier League With Pride’ campaign to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion in football.**

Replacing the previous Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, *Premier League With Pride* is designed to reduce the pressure placed on individual players while broadening league-wide responsibility.

The new initiative brings together the ongoing LGBTQ+ work the league and clubs carry out across the year to help deliver long-term change.

The initiative has been developed in consultation with clubs, representatives from LGBTQ+ supporters’ groups and a wide range of stakeholders, with a focus on embedding three core themes throughout the League and clubs’ work: education, celebration and action.

### Palace for All - Conduct

**Crystal Palace would like to remind supporters that acts of discrimination, including inappropriate chanting, violence and entering the field of play, are criminal offences – which can result in criminal convictions and banning orders.**

### How to Report Abuse

The Premier League and Crystal Palace urge anyone who witnesses abuse to report it, either to the nearest steward, police officer or to our confidential text service on **07507 477 669**.

Please include as much relevant information as possible, for example: RACISM, SMOKING, HOMOPHOBIA etc. Please include the stand, block, row and seat number you are in, and also identify the location of the anti- social behaviour, being as precise as possible. Please state if you wish to remain anonymous in your message.

Security staff will make every effort to deal with the issue. If they are unable to resolve the issue, each text will be followed up and investigated by a club staff member. You can also contact your nearest steward to report issues, who will do their best to help.

Anybody found guilty of discriminatory abuse towards any club employee, player, match official or supporter will receive an automatic club ban and may face criminal prosecution. The League and clubs are committed to working with the authorities to bring offenders to justice.

How to enter Selhurst Park

**Mobile phone chargers are available at the Information Centre on a matchday,** should you need to use them to access your ticket.

### Bag policy

Supporters are permitted to bring bags into Selhurst Park, **provided that they are small enough to fit safely beneath your seat.**

Larger bags will need to be dropped off at the **dedicated bag drop facility** located in the main car park, at the information point. This facility will be managed by the Crystal Palace staff and is free of charge.

Please note that supporters will be required to remove all lids from bottles of 500ml or less before entering Selhurst Park. Bottles over 500ml are not permitted.

### Pre-match light show

**Supporters are advised to arrive early to enjoy the full pre-match experience.**

Before the entrance of the two teams, at around **19:20-19:25 GMT,** there will be a light show containing flashing images, lights and entertainment.

Supporters will receive notice prior to the light show commencing. **Any supporters who suffer from light sensitivity should head to the concourses if affected.**

### Fanzone & Information Centre

Our **Fanzone** will be open from 16:30 GMT ahead of the match, with entertainment, music, refreshments all ready to enrich your pre-match experience.

The game was also marked by captain Aimee Everett's 100th competitive appearance for the club, and Potter spoke about the importance of her skipper.

"She has been a mainstay for so many years - she's really important to the team.

"I think you can see that when Aimee is playing well, the team are playing well - she has that ability to influence the team a lot.

"She's been at Palace for many, many years and hopefully she will be for many more to come," Potter said.

Palace have been in fine form in the Barclays Women's Super League 2 of late, winning six of the last seven games. 

Potter spoke about the strength of the league, and how every game presents a different challenge for her side.

She said: "I don't think people don't understand how quite strong this league is. It's probably the most exciting league that you can find right now, because all teams are strong. 

"There's no real massive disparity between teams. Anybody can beat anybody on their day. 

"I think you're seeing WSL players playing regularly in the WSL2 now that could still easily play in the WSL."

Finally, Potter looked ahead to Monday's trip to St Andrews in Birmingham, a game which is sure to be pivotal in the race for promotion.

She said: "It's going to be a tough game. We beat them previously at home. 

"They're going to want to be trying to make that right and turn that around, and we need to go for them.

"The more points that they get on us, the further away they get - so, we need to make sure that we're concentrating on us.

"We also always give the opposition full respect because they've got a brilliant squad.

"They've spent a lot of money, and so they've got a lot of expectation on them but we're going to go out there and look to do what we're always doing."

Crystal Palace Women's Manager Jo Potter spoke this week ahead of Monday evening's clash against second-place Birmingham City.

The young Eagles started strongly, dominating the first half with an aggressive high press and creating several chances before Donte Martin broke the deadlock on 26 minutes. Tottenham grew into the game as the half progressed, eventually equalising right on the stroke of half-time through Oliver Boast.

The second half saw fewer clear-cut chances, with both sides working hard in midfield and defence. Palace pushed for a late winner, with Mylo Bernard and David Angibeaud coming close, but were unable to break through.

Several Under-16 players stepped up impressively, including Lucca Benetton, Dylan Monk, Mylo Bernard, and Jamar Lee, who made his U18 competitive debut. Despite Judd receiving a late red card in added time, Palace held on to secure a hard-fought point, remaining second in the table on superior goal difference.

A legendary figure among fans of both clubs, Byrne was born in West Horsley in Surrey and lived in South Norwood.

As is so often the case for bright footballing talents, Byrne proved a late bloomer at youth level, having represented amateur sides Epsom Town and Guildford City Youth until shortly before his 16th birthday.

His potential was identified by his schoolteacher Vincent Blore, perchance also a former Palace and West Ham player, but Byrne reputedly required four trials with the Eagles before manager Cyril Spiers was fully convinced of his talents.

After representing Palace in the 1955/56 and '56/57 FA Youth Cups, impressing enough to be selected for England’s youth sides, Byrne signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday.

He went on to make his professional debut for the club five months later following an injury to Mike Deakin, and while the goals did not initially flow for Palace’s hot prospect – Byrne scored just seven times in 28 appearances in 57/58 – those numbers soon picked up as the forward developed his trademark confidence and swagger on the ball.

A mere 1.7 metres tall, Byrne’s stocky figure and quick feet made him a popular figure among Palace supporters, with many enjoying the entertainment of his consummate class, while he earned the nickname “Budgie” due to his talkative nature on the field.

A deep-lying centre forward before the position became widely adopted, Byrne’s hold-up play, close control and eye for a long ball made him not only a prolific goalscorer but also a valuable creator for his teammates.

As Byrne’s confidence grew, so too did his influence on the field: after scoring 17 and 16 times in respective seasons in the Fourth Division with the then-Glaziers – including a brace in Palace’s club-record 9-0 victory over Barrow – his best campaign yet earned him international recognition.

In 1960/61, not only did Byrne net 30 of Palace’s 110 goals as Arthur Rowe’s side won promotion - a post-war record for the club, matched only by Glenn Murray in 2012/13 - but Byrne became the first Fourth Division player to win a cap for England’s Under-23s, featuring against Wales in a 2-0 win in February 1961. He would play twice more for the side over the subsequent month, scoring once.

Here was a young player at the peak of his talents. In his biography of Byrne, 'Burn Budgie Byrne - Football Inferno', Brian Belton writes: “His gifts were rare and real and it is likely that no better player has worn the claret and blue of Crystal Palace.”

Byrne's sustained success in the red and blue prompted a full England call-up by manager Walter Winterbottom in November 1961, with the inside-left playing the whole of a 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland – one of only five post-war players to feature for England despite playing outside the top two divisions.

Other clubs soon came calling, however, with Byrne moving to West Ham in early 1962 for a reported £65,000 and forward Ron Brett – then a record British transfer fee for a Third Division player – following protracted negotiations with Hammers’ boss Ron Greenwood, who described him as “the English Di Stefano.”

In east London for five years, Byrne would win the FA Cup (scoring the winning goal in 1964) and European Cup Winners’ Cup (in 1965) and – on an individual basis – even once beat out the late, great Bobby Moore to the club’s Player of the Year award.

Byrne’s form for West Ham would sadly begin to tail as injuries took hold and Sir Geoff Hurst grew in prominence, and despite his outstanding talent, the forward would win just 11 caps for his country, narrowly missing out on a place in England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning squad.

And so to 15th February, 1967, when a plan to return to Palace for a fee of £45,000 was sealed. His first appearance was in a Friendly at Selhurst Park the following evening.

With the Glaziers in the Second Division at this point, Byrne would score six times further in the subsequent two seasons, taking his total in red and blue to 101 goals in 259 appearances.

After just over a year further with Palace, Byrne moved to Fulham for a further season in west London - coincidentally transferred as the two sides travelled back to the capital on a train from Manchester.

He went on to sign for Durban City in South Africa, where he would conclude his playing career before moving into management.

Byrne tragically passed away in 1999 at the tender age of 60, but memories still abound of the young, local, genial talent who excelled for clubs across the capital, and indeed for England, on a variety of stages.

It was Byrne’s destiny to do so, after all.

Football often possesses a funny habit of reuniting old friends, as proved to be the case when Johnny Byrne returned to Crystal Palace from West Ham United, on this day in February 1967.

Since 2020, Palace fans have taken on our annual away-day cycling challenges, covering more than 620 miles to destinations including Bournemouth (twice), Southampton, Aston Villa and Wolves, raising over £175,000 for us in the process.

We’re now on the hunt for riders of all abilities to take on Bike from Arsenal: The 100 Mile Tour, our sixth cycling challenge which starts in North London through hills back to Selhurst, to help push that total even higher.

2026’s ride is a two-day cycling event between the 23rd and 24th May, taking riders 134 miles from the Emirates Stadium in North London through Hertfordshire, the Chilterns, Berkshire, back through Surrey and into Selhurst Park for Palace’s final game of the season against Arsenal.

#### **WHERE DOES BIKE FROM ARSENAL: THE 100 MILE TOUR GO?**

Don’t let the name fool you, we’ll be taking the long way home back to South London!

The ride begins at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and takes on a 134-mile journey through countryside, towns and villages before finishing at Selhurst Park for Palace’s final game of the 2025/26 Premier League season against Arsenal.

**Day 1 (100 miles)**

- Roll out from the Emirates and head north west through Barnet and into St Albans
- Climb into the Chiltern Hills, passing through Chesham, Wendover, Chinnor Watlington and Woodcote
- Cross the Thames at Pangbourne before looping south of Reading and into Bracknell for a well-earned overnight stop

**Day 2 (34 miles)**

- Set off again through Ascot, Virginia Water, Chertsey and Walton-on-Thames
- Re-enter London via Kingston, New Malden and Wimbledon
- Ride the final stretch across Mitcham Common and down Whitehorse Lane to complete your journey at Selhurst Park

The cycle is not a race. You can go at your own pace and will be fully supported by our experienced ride leaders. 

Riders will be split into smaller groups based on ability, each led by an experienced cyclist who will guide the route, set the pace and keep everyone safe along the way.

There are two options:

- With a match ticket – £150 (limited to 30 riders)
- Without a match ticket – £125 (unlimited)

**If you’re a season ticket holder and are able to use it to attend the match, or if you’re not planning on attending the match, please select the ‘without a match ticket’ option (£125).**

**The ‘with a ticket’ package is limited to 30 riders. The ‘without a ticket’ option has no cap, so anyone can choose it, whether you plan to use your season ticket or skip the game**
